Today would be the 149th birthday of absurdist playwright Alfred Jarry (born Sep. 8, 1873). Although Jarry lived before the age of comic books, here's a comic story in which he appears as a character: From Short Order Comix #2, "Pillow Talk"; story and art by Bill Griffith, featuring Alfred Jarry as a patient in the hospital bed next to Griffith's recurring character Cherisse Fisk.
From Short Order Comix #1, "Randy & Cherisse in the 2nd Dimension"; story and art by Bill Griffith, featuring Randy O'Reilly and Cherisse Fisk (Griffith's recurring characters from Young Lust) depicted as cardboard cut-outs for this one story.
Continuing the April Fool's Day theme, a bit of parody from the underground comix world: From Bijou Funnies #8 (a special humor issue where various artists spoofed each others' work), "Inside Dopes"; story and art by Bill Griffith, parodying the style and characters of Kim Deitch.
Happy birthday to writer/artist Bill Griffith (born Jan. 20, 1944)! From Real Pulp Comics #2, "Musclemen of Mars," a particularly over-the-top parody of the exaggerated physiques of Richard Corben's comics; story and art by Bill Griffith.
Happy birthday to writer/artist Bill Griffith (born Jan. 20, 1944)! From Young Lust #4, "Scenic Views from the Griffith Observatory"; story and art by Bill Griffith (and featuring Griffith himself as a character/narrator).
